自动蜈蚣——MAZ 7907
03-04年左右,一个白俄人要我写的材料,手头东西很少,罢笔了!
"AUTOCENTIPEDE"
Recalling how bulky and superhigh-gravity freights are transported in Europe and in the world, the picture sees: the ballast tractor or two tractors pull a multiaxels trailer. And here is such a twelve axis fulldriving chassis. It looks unusual doesn't it? But the idea of this design becomes clear when getting acquainted with the 'LOAD" which is going to be carried by this monster.
The Minsk Plant of Wheel Tractors (MPWT) or MZKT, using Russian words, began to be called so only in 1991, when it received the status of separate firm Before it, since 1959, it had been a top secret production of the Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) and it produced special heavy duty vehicles for military equipments by the orders of Ministry of Defense of USSR
The automobile to be spoken about is called MAZ-7907. Wheel drive - 24x24. Load capacity- 150t. Gross-vehicle weight - 212t.Transmission - electrical.
Dimensions: length - 28,1m; width - 4,1m; height - 4,45m. Maximum speed - 25km/h.
A 1200 horsepower diesel engine was installed on the chassis joined with it by an alternator. Each of 24 wheels is driven by an individual electric motor with air-oleo cooling.
In 1980s, during the "cold war", a new intercontinental missile MX with a lift-off mass of 80 tons appeared in USA At that time the Soviet Union was working out a guided missile system "TOPOL" (Poplar) with a solid-propellant ballistic missile RT-2PM or (SS- 25 Sickle according to NATO classification) with a lift-off mass - 45 tons.
Naturally the USSR was frightened and did not want to lag behind, therefore Ministry of Defense ordered an analogue. So the project of the missile RT-23 "Molodetz" (fine fellow) "SS-24 Scalpel" weighing 100 tons with sectioned nuclear warhead appeared. Range of the missile was more than 10,000kms. And 'legs" under these "fellows" were ordered in Minsk. The autoproject was called "Virgin land-2". According to it a transportation-launching pack (TIP) with a intercontinental missile should have been placed on the truck with the length of 22.6m, diameter - 2.4m, weighing - 104.5 tons. It isn't worth explaining that autorocket-carrier with nuclear bombs not drive along general use roads. Therefore all of them were multiaxles and fulldriving. Minsk designers worked out and produced two pairs of different trucks. The first pair trucks MAZ-7906 were rnanufactured in 1984. They had a powerful diesel engine and two parallely paired off hydromechanical transmissions. As a matter of fact it was prolongation of those ideas go bed up in a design of four and six-axel machines manufactured by MZKT. In addition I may say that the seven-axel MAZ-7917 and the eight-axel MAZ-79221 rocket-carriers were subsequently built on the basis of this truck.
The second pair was issued in 1985 and they were automonsters MAZ-7907. In spite of having a considerable length the vehicle possesses a quite good maneuverability. The frame had a spine like type and fad a horizontal power hinge. This engineering solution in combination to a large course of strockets of the lever suspention allowed this truck to overcome a compound section of ground roads without any effort and without hanging up by points of bearings. At the same time this frame remained rigid at turns on a horizontal plane.
The small turning radius was provided by turn of all pairs of wheels, except 5th ,6th, 7th and 8th while the first four pairs turned to one side, the last four turned to the opposite side. If it is necessary to go round any obstacle, a synchronous turn of wheels to either side was possible and then the truck moved crablike.
The cabin interior of 7907 bang able to be climbe up by bulwark ladder only, like on locomotive, is rather impressive. Inside the cabin resembles captain's deck house of a boat, there are a huge sterling wheel, a plenty of index dials, switches and tumblers. There is a black-and-white monitor above the instrument panel. A driver can safety manoeuvre back-draft of the truck with the help of back sight telecamera (mirrors are of little help here). Beside the driver's place there is assistant's seat.
Experimental samples of automobiles had passed tests successfully but the rockets had no time to be carried on them, the "cold war" was over. Subsequently neither military or civil customers were interested in this carrier.
Thus had stood these two trucks for 10 years behind a high fence on polygon not far from Minsk, until one of them was offered a job. It got into history after it had carried a river cutter weighing 88 tons and having 40m in length, having driven 150km from the Berezina river to lake Naroch along general use roads on the territory of Belorussia
I do not know if the compilers of records book have heard about MAZ-7907 but to my mind its place is in this book. Certainly during the whole history of the plant having now the trade mark VOLAT (Byelorussian word "bogatyr" means giant-hero from folklore) there were many big carriers with 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-axels but this monster stood out for its huge overall dimensions ( being second only to supermonster MAZ-7904) and unusual design.
